A US-based human rights law group has called for urgent establishment of a criminal tribunal to bring those responsible for atrocities against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar to justice.

In a report, Public International Law and Policy Group said there are reasonable grounds to believe that Myanmar military committed crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes against Rohingya Muslims.

The report said that the international community is obliged to protect populations subjected to atrocity and crimes by their own governments and ensure justice and accountability for such crimes.

It called for establishment of an accountability mechanism, or an immediate reference to the International Criminal Court.

The group was contracted by the US State Department to carry out the investigation in Myanmar.
